I’ve checked out
Jumped off the bandwagon
Hopped off the train
I watch it zoom past me
Where did the time go?
I stand in front of the railway lines, luggage in both hands
I’ve decided that I’m going to walk
It can be lonely, I’ve heard from the other walkers
But being on the ground means you can collect pebbles and daisies en route
I do appreciate the fresh air
And I’ve got my trainers on now
They’re new and built exactly for my feet
My muscles are stronger than they used to be
They’re trained for the long distance
My calves accustomed to the burn
My back used to the strain
The train was overcrowded and noisy
The music bland and too modern
Overhead, there hung the big old clock
Screens with all the destinations marked
Time. Appointments. Seconds. Demands.
I do not turn back and look at the train
Perhaps a few weeks ago I would have
I would have longed to be back on the ride
To be seen by the other passengers
To share the same goals, desires, beliefs, values
Birds of a feather
But not now, not anymore
I’ve got everything I could need in my stuffed suitcases
The passengers think it strange
Why wouldn’t you want to hop back on and take the scenic route?
We’re all heading in the same direction anyway
Why not make it a little more fun?
But only those that have been up the mountain know the value of hiking
There are things I must do
I’ve got rivers to swim in and storms to brave
I have other walkers to meet along the way
To share snacks with and stories of the road
Besides, my body is stronger now
My mind like cast iron
I face the valley before me
I’ve got my trainers on now
I’m built for the long distance.
