We’ve emerged from underwater
After the plummet
But we had almost drowned
The old us lie at the bottom of the ocean
We had to let them sink, they were weighing us down
Treading is tiring
Sometimes we float
Like driftwood on the waves
Energy has to be preserved
We’re not out yet
Just merely head above
The sharks still lurk beneath us
And I know we saw a light in the distance
Was someone sending help?
How did we get here?
Weren’t we merely going for a swim?
Before the home ship abandoned us in the middle of the sea?
And the thunder and lightning shook the waters
Did we just catch sight of shore?
Or was that merely a mirage?
The days have dissolved into one now
The bobbing to and fro would do that
When will we return to the land of the living?
The old us are harder to remember now
With each ripple they seem less likely to have been real at all
We lie face up, our backs one with the current
Our skin burned from the sun
Our lips chapped from the salt
We hook index fingers
So not to drift apart during slumber
Our shapes make two starfish on the water
We hold on to see another day.
